"Give
Mack two options and he'll choose the third." -Pastor Joel
It is a
good thing to get some
background on your coach. I have been coaching informally for many
years and in full-time coaching practice since August of 2001. I
received my Professional Coach Certification (PCC) in April 2007. I
fully enjoy my clients and the coaching process. Here are some of the
major highlights that bridge the creative, technical and other aspects
of my life.
Observer and
student of human behavior.
I have always been a student of human behavior -from selling newspapers
as a kid up to now. This is evident in my B.A. degrees in Psychology
and Theatre and an M.A. in human communication studies. Other
qualifications that apply to coaching include assessments
(Myers-Briggs, Personal Interests Attitudes and Behavior, Disc,
Attribute Index), and a certificate in Core Essentials from CoachU, and
a Certified Network Professional (CNP) from BNI.
Business
and Professional. I have
had several career specialties, most related to business and sales in
some way. This includes work in sales or support and graphics for
corporations and ad agencies, print, web development, leadership
development, sound systems and theatre.
Writer/Editor/PR. I have written and published materials for
myself and others. This includes business periodicals, Sunday school
lessons, newsletters, web sites and other sales, marketing and
information resources. I have been a regular contributor to BizLife
Magazine on issues of coaching and personal development. --And I even
got one of my clients into the Wall Street Journal.
Special
Event Planning for public
debates and events, seminars, workshops and general gatherings. I have
worked with resource people from the U.S. Department of State, United
Nations, various countries and special interest organizations. I have
letters of commendation from the Heritage Foundation and High Frontier
(both conservative), from the Institute for Space and Security Studies
(considered liberal), from Congress and U.S. District court. I love to
produce a good show.
Performance
with guitar and banjo.
The skill sets surrounding this have provided the thread for connecting
everything in my life together. As an entertainer I have had to produce
my own programs, songs, bookings and written materials as well as to
manage the technical production of sound and recording systems.
Graphic
design for print, presentation
and web. I have produced brochures, posters, programs, slide kits,
overhead transparencies, PowerPoint presentations and web sites. I have
ad agency, corporate and freelance design experience for high end
production and for meeting unreasonable deadlines while maintaining
focus and good humor.
Political
and social consicence. With
the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, we have reached the
point where more weapons in the hands of more people actually make us
less secure. Really good planets are hard to find, so I believe we need
to take care of this one that we have. I have done projects with the
American Freedom Association (AFA), American Friends Service
Committee(AFSC), Habitat for Humanity, and others.
Faith
into Action.
I had a mountaintop spiritual rebirth out of a coffeehouse ministry
many years ago, and have been a follower of Christ since then. (True
that the path of new creation in Christ has been a challenging
adventure, especially when the old creation keeps getting in the
way.) I have been a Baptist, a
Quaker, nondenominational,
and some mix of others. I currently attend Westover
Church and help with the marriage ministry to
blended/stepfamilies.
General.
At least four times in
my career I have been downsized and my positions (and one whole
department) totally eliminated. I feel that the hardest thing I ever
had to do was to become like a parent to my father after he had the
stroke that led to his death. The second hardest thing was to end a
long-term friendship because my boundaries were repeatedly violated. My
first marriage ended too long ago to remember the details. Yes, there
is life after such crash and burn experiences, though things shift a
lot.
Some of
the most fun challenges I
have had were in the graphic design and printing business where often I
was called upon to fix or invent "production enhancements" with wire,
string, tape and cardboard. Seems like I do similar things coaching
people… I also have the great challenge of a wonderful wife,
two kids and a dog and the balancing, scheduling, and whatall involved
to invent and maintain the delicious habits that keep it all going.
Diversity
of Experience
My mentor says that my diversity of experience brings a richness to my
coaching clients. It has kept things interesting for me as well...

Achieved 109 of 127 Goals
The true story of John Goddard is one of my favorites. It points out that when you
write something down, it takes on a different reality.
At age
15 (around 1940), John Goddard wrote down 127 goals he wanted to
achieve in his life. On his web site you will see that he has accomplished
109 things from his original list.
I heard an
update on Mr. Goddard, and the speaker said that as of 2002, Mr.
Goddard extended his list to over 600 goals and he has achieved over
500 of them --he even got sponsorships to bet paid for some of them,
like being the first person to kayak down the Amazon River...
You
are 37% more likely to do something if you write it down. --Yes, I am
recommending that if you really want to get it done, write it down.
So,
where's your latest list??

The Candy Store
Once upon a time, a candy store owner noticed that
one of his clerks was much more popular than the rest. People
would often wait for this girl to help them, even when another
clerk was available. Yet he could not see what was different, so
he asked her if she knew what she did.
"Yes, I do," was her
reply. "The other girls start by putting a lot of candy on the scale
and then they keep taking it away until they get the right weight, and
it makes people feel like they are not getting enough candy. I always
start with a little and keep adding to is so the customers always feel
like they are getting more."
